Your journey to prominence in the crypto space is remarkable. How did someone from a small country like the Czech Republic rise to become one of the most influential voices in the global crypto scene?
I spent my early years in the Czech Republic until I was 16, when basketball opened an unexpected door—I was recruited to play at a boarding school near Philadelphia. What started as a planned year or two turned into seven years in the U.S. I earned a full scholarship to Skidmore College, but a knee injury ended my basketball career after two years. That setback became pivotal; it gave me time to dive deep into Bitcoin research just before the 2017 boom. I wrote one of the first academic theses on Bitcoin, which led to a position at the first dedicated crypto research publication. Building a presence on Twitter amplified my voice in the community. Looking back, my journey wasn't just about being in the right place at the right time—it was about having the curiosity to explore this nascent technology deeply and the adaptability to pivot when opportunities arose. The perspective of coming from a smaller market actually helped me think globally from the start.
After a challenging period known as the "crypto winter," the industry seems to be making a strong comeback. What do you think are the driving forces behind this shift?
The recent resurgence demonstrates crypto's fundamental resilience rather than just another cycle. While the Bitcoin halving created natural supply pressure, several structural changes have strengthened the market. Institutional adoption has matured significantly—we're seeing major financial players not just investing but building infrastructure. The approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs marked a watershed moment, bringing unprecedented accessibility to traditional investors. Trump's victory has certainly influenced market sentiment, but I'd argue the real driving forces are deeper: improved market infrastructure, institutional-grade custody solutions, and clearer regulatory frameworks in many jurisdictions. Rather than speculating on price movements, I focus on these foundational improvements that make each cycle more robust than the last.
How are global macroeconomic conditions and geopolitical changes shaping the future of crypto?
The interplay between macro conditions and crypto has become increasingly sophisticated. Take the Federal Reserve's rate hikes—while higher rates initially pressured crypto prices, they've also accelerated institutional interest in stablecoins for yield strategies. We're seeing fascinating regional dynamics: Argentina's hyperinflation drove local Bitcoin premiums to record highs, while El Salvador's Bitcoin adoption experiment has influenced other Latin American countries' crypto policies. The Russia-Ukraine conflict highlighted crypto's role in humanitarian aid and cross-border payments, while also spurring regulatory discussions about sanctions compliance. Through The Block's research, we've observed strong correlations between geopolitical tensions and stablecoin flows across Asian markets. Looking ahead, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could reshape the competitive landscape—China's digital yuan pilots are already influencing how other nations approach crypto regulation.
What is the core value proposition of crypto in today's modern economy?
Bitcoin's core value proposition in today's economy lies in its facilitation of financial sovereignty, enabling individuals to exercise freedom over their assets and transactions. This autonomy is particularly valuable in regions plagued by corruption or experiencing rapid inflation of local currencies, as Bitcoin offers a means to preserve wealth and maintain purchasing power independent of governmental fiscal policies. Over the next decade, Bitcoin's role is poised to expand as more individuals and institutions recognize its potential as a hedge against economic instability and as a tool for enhancing financial inclusion. Its adoption could empower people to opt out of corrupt financial systems and protect themselves from the devaluation of fiat currencies, thereby promoting economic freedom and resilience on a global scale. There is also a good possibility that central banks look at Bitcoin as an asset to diversify their gold holdings.
What are the main trends shaping the industry today, and where do you think it's heading?
Beyond Bitcoin's prominence, the cryptocurrency ecosystem is evolving through key trends. Smart contract platforms like Ethereum and Solana enable decentralized applications that facilitate complex transactions. Decentralized Finance (DeFi) platforms are transforming financial services by allowing activities such as lending, borrowing, and trading without intermediaries. Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) have introduced new opportunities for digital ownership, impacting sectors like art and gaming. In the next 5 to 20 years, advancements in interoperability, clearer regulatory frameworks, and technological innovations in scalability and security are expected to drive mainstream acceptance and integration into daily life.
For those overwhelmed by the rapid development of crypto, where do you recommend they start?
Start with understanding the fundamentals rather than chasing trends. I recommend a three-phase approach: First, educate yourself using reputable sources—The Block's Learn platform offers structured content from basics to advanced topics. Second, begin with small experiments—set up a wallet, make a few transactions, try using a DeFi protocol. Understanding comes from hands-on experience. Third, join communities but maintain skepticism—Twitter/X is valuable for real-time insights, but verify information independently. Common pitfalls include rushing into complicated trading strategies or falling for high-yield promises. Focus on understanding the technology and use cases before considering investments. The Block's daily newsletter can help you stay informed about significant developments without getting overwhelmed by noise.
How would you describe the state of the crypto scene in the Czech Republic?
The Czech Republic has carved out a unique position in the global crypto landscape. Prague, in particular, has become a hub for crypto innovation, hosting companies like Trezor, which pioneered hardware wallets, and Braiins, which develops mining software used worldwide. The country's strong technical education system produces excellent developers, many of whom are now working on cutting-edge blockchain projects. While we may not have the market size of larger countries, our regulatory environment is pragmatic and supportive. EthPrague has become one of Europe's premier technical conferences, attracting developers globally. What's particularly interesting is how Czech companies have focused on fundamental infrastructure rather than speculative projects—this has built lasting value and international respect.
Could you tell us more about Emergence – its purpose, goals, and why you chose Prague as the venue?
Emergence isn't just another crypto conference—it's designed as an intimate gathering of industry leaders focused on substantive discussions. We've confirmed keynote speakers including prominent regulators, institutional investors, and technical innovators. The program focuses on three tracks: institutional adoption, technical innovation, and regulatory developments. We chose Prague's Congress Center not just for its historical significance in hosting Devcon, but because Prague offers the perfect blend of accessibility, infrastructure, and crypto-friendly environment. We're incorporating unique elements like hands-on technical workshops, closed-door roundtables for institutional investors, and specialized networking sessions matched by participant expertise. This isn't an event for pitching tokens—it's about advancing the industry through meaningful dialogue and collaboration.
What role do you see for regulation in fostering innovation while protecting consumers?
Regulating cryptocurrency is essential to prevent blatant scams, fraud, and exploitative schemes while protecting uninformed consumers. However, such regulation must strike a careful balance to avoid overreach that could stifle innovation and growth in the sector. Currently, even well-intentioned actors are often punished or face severe scrutiny due to regulatory ambiguity, while actual scams and fraudulent schemes sometimes face less stringent consequences. Oversight should focus on mitigating risks like fraud and market manipulation through proportionate and targeted measures that address genuine issues without imposing unnecessary burdens. Clear, consistent, and transparent regulatory guidance is crucial to eliminate uncertainty, enabling the industry to innovate confidently without ambiguity about compliance. Achieving this thoughtful balance between regulation and freedom will foster a thriving cryptocurrency ecosystem while safeguarding consumer interests.
What's next for The Block under your leadership? Are there any major projects or initiatives you're particularly excited about?
The Block is evolving from a news and research platform into a comprehensive knowledge ecosystem. Campus, which we're launching at Emergence, exemplifies this evolution. It's not just another crypto education platform—it's a structured professional certification program developed in collaboration with industry experts and academic institutions. The curriculum spans from basic blockchain technology to advanced topics like DeFi mechanics and security analysis. What sets it apart is its focus on practical application—each module includes real-world case studies and hands-on technical exercises. The certification process includes both theoretical knowledge and practical assessment, similar to the CFA but tailored for crypto. Beyond Campus, we're expanding our institutional research offerings and developing new data analytics tools. Our goal is to become the definitive source for professional crypto education and research.
